For example, college football players like the ones on our campus undergo lots of training before their season even begins. They have camps in the summer, where they must be in full pads in the blistering hot sun. Not only that, but their entire day, for two whole weeks, is based around the sport.

I can watch professional CoD players and crazy-good Fortnite streamers (we’re still waiting on a professional Fortnite tournament) and certainly feel a great deal of awe and respect, but I personally could never admire an eSports ‘athlete’ to the extent that I admire watching LeBron James play basketball or Mike Trout play baseball.

And of course, there are counters to every argument. If saying amateur gamers aren’t participating in a sport, does that mean Little League baseball or house league soccer also cannot be classified as sports? It’s an impossible debate, and one that won’t be settled anytime soon. Whether it’s a sport or not, Fortnite is a blast, and that’s really all that matters.

But the meanings of words change over time. Dictionaries are supposed to describe what a word currently means, and not what it is supposed to mean. And therefore, with the evolution of esports and how it is gradually being recognized as a sport, the definition of athlete could change. October 1958: Physicist Invents First Video Game In October 1958, Physicist William Higinbotham created what is thought to be the first video game. It was a very simple tennis game, similar to the classic 1970s video game Pong, and it was quite a hit at a Brookhaven National Laboratory open house. Higinbotham was born on October 25, 1910 in Bridgeport, CT and grew up in Caledonia, NY.

He graduated from Williams College in 1932, and then went to graduate school in physics at Cornell University. At Cornell as a graduate student he worked as an electronics technician. In 1941, he joined the MIT Radiation Lab, where he worked on cathode ray tube displays for radar systems. In 1943 he moved to Los Alamos to work on electronics for a timing system for the atomic bomb.

In 1948 he joined Brookhaven National Laboratory’s instrumentation group. He served as head of that group from 1951 to 1968. During that time, in October Brookhaven held annual visitors’ days, during which thousands of people would come tour the lab. Higinbotham was responsible for creating an exhibit to show off the instrumentation division’s work.

  1. Most of the existing exhibits were rather dull.
  2. Higinbotham thought he could better capture visitors’ interest by creating an interactive demonstration.
  3. He later recalled in a magazine interview that he had thought “it might liven up the place to have a game that people could play, and which would convey the message that our scientific endeavors have relevance for society.” The instrumentation group had a small analog computer that could display various curves, including the path of a bouncing ball, on an oscilloscope.

It took Higinbotham only a couple of hours to conceive the idea of a tennis game, and only a few days to put together the basic pieces. Having worked on displays for radar systems and many other electronic devices, Higinbotham had no trouble designing the simple game display.

As long as they pressed the button when the ball was in their court, players couldn’t actually miss the ball, but if they hit it at the wrong time or hit it at the wrong angle, the ball wouldn’t make it over the net. Balls that hit the ground would bounce like a real tennis ball.

When the ball went off the court or into the net, players hit a reset button to start the next round. Tennis for Two had none of the fancy graphics video games use today. The cathode ray tube display simply showed a side view of a tennis court represented by just two lines, one representing the ground and a one representing the net.

The ball was just a dot that bounced back and forth. Players also had to keep score for themselves. The game circuitry was fairly simple, using mostly resistors, capacitors and relays, though it did use transistors for the fast switching needed when the ball was in play.

  • It quickly became the most popular exhibit, with people standing in long lines to get a chance to play.

The oscilloscope and computer were taken for other uses, and Higinbotham designed a new visitor’s day display that showed cosmic rays passing through a spark chamber.

Higinbotham, who had already patented 20 inventions, didn’t think his tennis game was particularly innovative. Although he saw that the Brookhaven visitors liked the game, he had no idea how popular video games would later become. Even had he had the foresight to patent the game, since he worked at a government lab, the federal government would have owned the patent, so he wouldn’t have made any money from it.

“It never occurred to me that I was doing anything very exciting. The long line of people I though was not because this was so great but because all the rest of the things were so dull,” he once said. Tennis for Two was more or less forgotten for some time.

By Shannon Hunt Without hesitation, every person I’ve met that considers themselves to be a Gamer has an opinion on what a Gamer is. A few define it reasonably as just a word that represents someone who likes to play games, with the possible addition of playing them regularly.

  • Dictionary.com simply states a Gamer is “a person who plays games, especially computer or video games.” Makes sense, right? By this definition, it’s a very inclusive group to be a part of that seems accepting and easy going.
  • This definition even allows Tabletop Gamers a seat at the “table”.
  • Ah, but as words often do, the question invites each individual asked to apply every filter they’ve assimilated on the topic to their answer.

When I asked the question “What is a Gamer?” on Twitter and of my own Gamer friends, I got a huge variety of answers. Many included long lists of requirements that reflected their own style of game play as though they were a part of some exclusive club that had benchmarks for membership.

Someone who plays games as their primary chosen entertainment. Someone who plays games more than they watch TV. Someone who seeks out and finds all the Easter eggs in the games they play. Someone who plays hard core shooter games rather than fantasy games. Someone who games and is tech savvy, but puts little effort into personal hygiene or fashion. Oh and they have anger issues. Someone who enjoys games so much that games dominate their spare time. They are also antisocial in public, but connected within the Gaming Community.

We tend to want to express an empowered version of ourselves more times than not. As a Female Gamer, I look at these definitions and realize that many of them largely exclude women from the “Gamer” title or “club membership” mentality. Why? Women often have real life challenges that keep us from being able to invest the time and energy needed to gain the kind of exclusivity that these narrow definitions allow.

  • It is hard to game as primary entertainment when you have kids watching Disney Movies on TV or playing their own games on your gaming system.
  • And what of dance recitals and soccer games and school functions? Many Female Gamers are of child-rearing years.
  • Considering raising children covers a considerably long span even with just one child, this might keep us out of the Gamer Club for most of our adult lives.

Never mind adding careers to that busy schedule. As for Easter eggs, they take a long time to find and are very elusive unless you are of the “youtube the spoilers” camp. Women are often attracted to fantasy games rather than first-person shooter games.

They are still difficult, in spite of their less aggressive appearance. They require a great deal of finesse and effort to master gameplay, the same as shooter games. However, I suppose killing things as a beautiful elf or adorable gnome is somehow not to be taken seriously enough to gain Gamer status in some circles.

The characters we choose are often sexualized by Male Gamers as well, which forces us Female Gamers into sexualized roles we didn’t seek out, or excludes us altogether from general Gamer status. And there is no guarantee when playing a game that a female character will even be a female.

It is many times a Male Gamer who “would rather look at a girl’s butt instead of a guy’s butt” or who says that female characters are smaller targets in games, so they use them to avoid getting shot. Interestingly, you rarely see a Female Gamer choose to play a male character, if given a choice. We tend to want to express an empowered version of ourselves more times than not.

As for the stereotypes mentioned, maybe the Gamer Club isn’t so attractive after all. If being a Gamer means that I don’t bathe or know how to dress myself or am completely ineffective when dealing with humans in daily life, maybe I’m just a female who plays games.

No. I don’t believe that. The truth is, I *AM* a Gamer and I *AM* a female. Thus, I am a Female Gamer. I choose to embrace the simple “person who plays games” definition and give each Gamer the space to be whatever kind of Gamer they want to be. It is in this place of freedom from judgment or requirements that we can all make the most friends and have the most fun.

As for me, I release myself from the expectations of the “Gamer Club” and embrace confidently being a Gamer who is female. And therefore, with the evolution of esports and how it is gradually being recognized as a sport, the definition of athlete could change. Fortnite just officially became a high school and college sport Fortnite, one of the world’s most popular games, will now be an official high school sport and college sport, thanks to an LA-based startup called, The company has partnered with Epic Games to bring competitive league play to the collegiate and high school level.

  • This also marks PlayVS’s entry into colleges and universities.
  • PlayVS launched in April of 2018 with a mission of bringing esports to high school, with a league akin to traditional sports like basketball or football.
  • Through a partnership with the NFHS, high schools (or parents, or the students themselves) can pay $64/player to be placed in a league to compete with neighboring schools, just like any other sport.

But PlayVS partnerships go deeper than the NFHS (the NCAA of high school sports), as the company is also partnering with the publishers themselves. This is the part that puts PlayVS a step ahead of its competition, according to founder Delane Parnell.

While other companies are setting up paid competitive leagues around video games, very few if any have partnerships at the publisher level. This means that those startups could be shut down on a whim by the publishers themselves, which own the IP of the game. PlayVS is the first to score such a partnership with Epic Games, the maker of the world’s most popular video game.

These publisher partnerships also allow PlayVS to productize the experience in a way that requires almost no lift for schools and organizations. Players simply sign into PlayVS and get dropped into their scheduled match. At the end, PlayVS pulls stats and insights directly from the match, which can be made available to the players, coaches, fans and even recruiters.

And it doesn’t hurt that PlayVS has quite a bit of cash in the bank — the company has raised $96 million since launch. Unlike the rest of the PlayVS titles, the first season of Fortnite competition will be free to registered users, courtesy of the partnership with Epic Games. Registration for the first seasons closes on February 17 for high schools, and February 24 for colleges and universities.

The season officially kicks off on March 2. The format for competition will be Duos, and organizations can submit as many teams of two as they like.
